Widely distributed in nature; abundance in earth's crust 0.001-0.002%. Principle ores include cobaltite (CoS2.CoAs2), linnaeite (Co3S4), smaltite (CoAs2) and erythrite (3CoO.As2O5.8H2O). Plays an important part in animal nutrition; the absence of cobalt-contg vitamin B12 causes pernicious anemia.
